But what remains after enjoying the perfect cup of your favorite coffee? Fancy another one? … Maybe that too, but today it’s about the coffee grounds.

This has already done its job, you might think. But there is so much more to the supposed waste product!

Processing coffee grounds

Dry coffee grounds are required for most applications. To do this, spread the fresh set out on a suitable surface (baking tray, plate, etc.) and place in the sun. The residual heat from the oven can also be used to dry it.

The dry coffee residue can then be stored in a jar. Wet set must be used immediately, as mold forms quickly.

Before we get started, a few brief notes on coffee grounds:

The oils they contain can combine with food residues and clog pipes.

Caffeine is harmful to pets, so please keep dogs and cats away from it.

All-rounder in the garden

Slugs hate it, earthworms love it – In the garden, coffee grounds help to repel pests and attract beneficial insects. In addition, most plants benefit from the nutrients in the waste product.

Coffee fertilizer

The nutrients nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus they contain make coffee grounds a suitable fertilizer for most plants. However, seedlings and houseplants should not be fertilized. For the latter, boil the coffee grounds or use some cold coffee. Mixed into the soil, the slightly acidic coffee grounds change the pH value.

The following plants thrive particularly well in acidic conditions:

  • Blueberries
  • Cranberries
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Pumpkin
  • Roses
  • Peonies
  • Rhododendron

If you want to know exactly, you can measure the pH value in your garden. Here we have an article for you with an explanation!

Pest control

Caffeine is toxic to many snail species. Furthermore, the odor disturbs ants. To control pests, simply sprinkle the coffee grounds in a ring around the plants.

Burned in a fireproof bowl, the set also repels wasps and mosquitoes.

Attract beneficial insects

Coffee grounds attract earthworms, which in turn help to loosen the soil. The kit is worked into the raised bed for this purpose or also applied to the compost.

Remove odors

Coffee grounds are also suitable as an odor killer. The waste product virtually absorbs unpleasant odors and leaves behind at most a pleasant coffee scent as a by-product. A win-win situation!

Odors in the kitchen

If your hands smell less pleasant after cutting garlic, coffee grounds will neutralize the odours. Simply rub the fresh set between your hands and rinse off. The coarse-grained structure also ensures exfoliation, but more on this later.

A bowl of fresh coffee grounds in the fridge helps to neutralize odours.

Shoes

Sprinkle dried coffee grounds in your shoes and the next day the unpleasant odors are gone. It is advisable to place the dried set in a piece of filter paper or cloth, for example, and tie the whole thing up with a rubber ring.

Cleaning with coffee

Who would have thought that coffee could also be used as a cleaning agent? The coarse-grained structure of the waste product helps to remove dirt and is used as a natural scouring milk or to give glass a new shine.

Coffee scouring milk

The exfoliating effect of coffee not only benefits the skin, but also encrusted pans and the grill. Together with a damp sponge, the coffee grounds are used like scouring milk to gently remove the deposits.

So when the coffee machine is emptied at the end of the day, it can be used to clean the pan from dinner.

Glasses, vases

For clean glasses and vases, pour hot water over the coffee grounds and shake gently. With this method, the glass containers should be made of tempered glass to prevent cracks. If in doubt, use warm rather than boiling water.

Coffee body care

Coffee is a popular ingredient in the beauty industry. No wonder, coffee has a natural exfoliating effect, without any microplastics, and the caffeine it contains also has a firming effect

Full body peeling

Coffee grounds mixed with olive oil make a wonderful scrub. Gently massage the mixture into the skin in circular movements and rinse off with lukewarm water. The caffeine it contains accelerates blood circulation and has a dehydrating effect, which ensures a firming effect.
